IF THERE'S one place you need to be with the kidlets these holidays, it's Ballarat. With an array of things to see and do, you'll find plenty to keep the whole family entertained for days on end.

Here are five experiences for you to enjoy during the April break.

1. The outdoors

Ballarat School Holidays

Sovereign Hill will come to life once again these holidays with a range of all-ages activities. Watch the Redcoat Soldiers march ceremoniously down Main Street each day in their brand new uniforms, try your hand at candlemaking, or catch a hilarious pantomime in the Victoria Theatre.

Explore Ballarat's beautiful native parks and landscapes by taking the family for a stroll around the iconic Lake Wendouree or a picnic at the historic Ballarat Botanical Gardens.

The Buninyong Botanic Gardens will host its own Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 from 9am. Bring your own blankets and picnics, or purchase some delightful eats from one of the vendors. There will also be free entertainment as well as face painting on site. There's also a number of other spots in the area hosting Easter-themed activities, so make sure to check them out here.

For some more adventures, weave your way through the magical mazes at Maze House, try your luck at Gold Rush Mini Golf, or admire the fierce (internationally-acclaimed) jousters at Kryal Castle.

2. Creativity

Let the children harness their creativity as part of the Art Gallery of Ballarat's autumn school holiday program. The program is an opportunity for students to work with local professional artists and expand their art knowledge and skills in a joyous atmosphere. For another dose of art and craft, with a side of coffee, head over to I Made It, Creative Cafe and admire the range of artistic offerings on the table. Don't forget to indulge in some homemade deliciousness as well!

3. Native wildlife

The Ballarat Wildlife Park needs to be your next port of call during your Ballarat getaway. Get up-close-and-personal with some adorable kangaroos, koalas and the darling penguins. Admire the slithery, slimy reptiles including the 5-metre-long Crunch the Croc, and find out all there is to know about the Alpine Dingoes, Tasmanian Devils and Wedge Tailed Eagle.

4. Arts + Culture

Ballarat is home to several museums and galleries, each known for their unique offerings. Marvel at the contemporary works at The Lost Ones (and head downstairs for a sneaky whiskey or wine afterwards), delight in the ceramic works of Ruby and Peter Pilven at the Post Office Gallery, enjoy the original watercolours of famed Australian artist Kenneth Jack at Gallery on Sturt, or head to the Creswick Museum and unearth the story of the famous Lindsay Family (of The Magic Pudding fame).

Between April 14 and April 22, BLOC Music Theatre will also be staging the famed music Spamalot. A barrel of laughs, this production is sure to have the whole family in stitches.

5. Dining
