BALLARAT'S flourishing craft brewing and distilling scene will be in the spotlight at the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular, which kicks off in Melbourne this Friday.

The May 17-19 event at Carlton's Royal Exhibition Building will showcase the best Australian and New Zealand craft breweries and cider producers.

Representing Ballarat will be Red Duck Beer, Larrikin Gin, Cafe Sidra/321 Cider, Hop Temple and Dollar Bill Brewing.

GABS will also serve as the launch of a new Ballarat craft beer trail map, which will be distributed to festivalgoers.

The specTAPular will feature hundreds of beers and ciders — including up to 180 beers and ciders made just for the event — outstanding food vendors, interactive exhibitor stalls, food and drink education, plus entertainment and activities.

In 2015, GABS was named as one of world's top 20 beer festivals by renowned American magazine The Beer Connoisseur.

"We’ll be there all weekend talking up Ballarat’s growing craft brewing scene, with the aim of encouraging people to come to Ballarat and experience it themselves," Visit Ballarat industry development manager Serena Eldridge said.
