THE Labour Day long weekend is fast appraochin. Here are the top five things to see and do during the three days.

1. Ballarat Begonia Festival

Ballarat's iconic three-day festival returns for its 67th year. The event is one of the country's oldest and longest-running community festivals and features the famous Begonia display, DIY gardening demonstrations, a comedy and circus tent, live music, a plethora of children's activities, and food and drink from a variety of vendors. Enough to keep you going for all three days!

2. Begonia Parade

The Begonia Festival culminates in the much-loved Begonia Parade, attracting up to 10,000 people every year. This community parade boasts everything from vintage machinery to modern vehicles as well as vibrant entries by local businesses, schools and organisations. Definitely one for the kids!

3. Ballarat Antique and Vintage Fair

Held every year during the Labour Day long weekend, this fair is one for the lovers of yesteryear. With multiple displays from bygone years including vintage cars, antique jewellery, linen and collectibles as well as the vibrant fashion of the 60s and 70s, this fair will have you in wonder and awe at the intricacies of the past. And the best part, you can buy a piece or two of history for yourself!

4. Chinese Fortunes

The Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka presents its major exhibition for 2017 Chinese Fortunes. The exhibition explores stories of early Chinese Australians - the miners and gardeners, the merchants and detectives, the philanthropists and entertainers - and the rich diversity of Chinese Australian history leading up to Federation. Featuring relics, photographs, and garments, Chinese Fortunes will provide you with an understanding of one of Australia's most influential and determined cultural groups.  

5. Cats

This weekend will be your last chance to see Lyric Theatre's production of Cats on stage at the iconic Her Majesty's Theatre. The show is set amongst a larger-than-life playground and is alive with all your favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
