IT'S THAT time of the year again. But before you start pulling your hair out - don't. Because we've got your back.
Here are five things you can do with the family in Ballarat these school holidays.
1. Art and Culture
In case you hadn't noticed, the city is alive over the next couple of months as part of the spring Season of the Arts. And before you say "but that's only appropriate for the adults", maybe you should check out the plethora of events that have been created especially for the children. For example, in the lead up to the Art Gallery of Ballarat's Romancing the Skull exhibition, the gallery will be presenting a Mexican Spirit Hunt - featuring storytelling, physical activities and loads of art-making that celebrate life beyond the mortal world. The gallery also hosts a series of school holiday programs in the spring, giving kids the opportunity to work with professional artists to create their own masterpieces.
What better way to celebrate the weekend's AFL Grand Final than with a Footy Frenzy! Get into the finals spirit, meet AFL stars, participate in clinics and enjoy a huge range of activities and entertainment! And if you're lucky enough to be one of the first 1000 children to arrive on the day, you'll even receive a free football. Featuring the Mik Maks live, as well as face-painting, inflatables, facepainting and loads more - it's sure to be a great day out for the whole fam!
All this school holiday mania is sure to have you working up an appetitie. There are loads of family-friendly dining options in Ballarat to suit all tastes and budgets. Whether you're after a nice brunch and coffee, or some classic pub grub, you'll find what you're looking for at one of the city's prized cafes, restaurants and eateries.
Definitely one for the adults and older kids, the Ballarat Cabaret Festival kicks off on October 5 for four night. Bringing to life the city's iconic buildings and venues, including the Mining Exchange, The Lost Ones Basement Bar and The Mechanics Institute, this year's Festival will feature contemporary acts from Ballarat and beyond performing against a stunningly historic backdrop.
If there's one thing we all know and love about Ballarat, it's the major attractions. Sovereign Hill, the Ballarat Wildlife Park, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka, Creswick Woollen Mills and Kryal Castle can all provide ample entertainment for the kids (and yourself) during your stay in Ballarat. Happy kids, happy holidays!
